Stephen Koenig, director of research & development, describes Gentoo as "perhaps one of the most customizable Linux distributions available," and says that users will definitely need to be comfortable compiling applications to take advantage of Gentoo.
Portage, the software distribution system for Gentoo, runs a large portion of the operating system and more than 10,000 packages currently exist in it. To update to the latest version of all applications in the Gentoo system, VPSLink says one needs to simply type 'emerge-uD world' and everything will be up-to-date.
